Acts 1 KJV: The Promise, the Ascension, and the Birth of the Mission

Acts 1 opens with Luke addressing Theophilus and recounting the resurrected Jesus appearing to His disciples for forty days, speaking of the kingdom of God (Acts 1:3, KJV). The chapter culminates in the Ascension and the selection of Matthias to replace Judas.

Key verses to memorize:

• Acts 1:8 (KJV) — "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
• Acts 1:11 (KJV) — "...this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."

Most know the Great Commission from Matthew 28. Acts 1:8 is its operating system. Jesus tells the disciples not to leave Jerusalem until they receive the promise of the Father — and then promises a power-source for the mission: the Holy Spirit.

The geography is intentional: Jerusalem (your home), Judaea (your region), Samaria (people unlike you), the uttermost part of the earth (everywhere). This is the original purposeful living blueprint.

Acts 1:9-11 records Jesus being taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. The Ascension is not the end of His ministry — it is the activation of ours. He returns to the Father so the Spirit can be given.

For the believer, the Ascension teaches three things:

1. Christ's mission continues through us.
2. The Spirit empowers what willpower cannot.
3. He is coming back — live with eternity in view.

This is the heartbeat of biblical principles.

• Stay mission-clear. Eternity is real; act like it.
